The word Nakhon means "city" (as with Buri or Thani), while Pathom means "first or primary". The name signifies that Nakhon Pathom is the first or primary city, not in the sense of a capital city, but rather the seat of cultural devel- opment dating back to the Ayudhaya period (when Ayudhaya was the capital city of Thailand). This, in turn, means that Nakhon Pathom pre-dates the founding of Bangkok, which will be celebrating its 220th. anniversary as the capital city this year. In fact, archaeological findings date the settle- ment back thousands of years.
Nakhon Pathom province covers an area of about 2,168 sq. kilometres to the west of Bangkok while the provincial town is located about 58 kilometres away on Highway 4.
